Freud y Ernst Laqueur en un artículo de mayo de 1935 “Sobre la hormona masculina cristalina de los testículos (testosterona)”. Llamaron a la hormona testosterona, de las raíces de testículo y esterol, y el sufijo de cetona. La síntesis química de la testosterona se logró en agosto de ese año, cuando Butenandt y G. Hanisch publicaron un artículo que describía “Un método para preparar testosterona a partir del colesterol”.Solo una semana después, el tercer grupo, Ruzicka y A. Wettstein, anunciaron una solicitud de patente en un artículo “Sobre la preparación artificial de la hormona testicular testosterona (Androsten-3-one-17-ol)”.
